Our Story
Like many people, we were both raised the “traditional American” way. We were put into public schools where we were told that we needed an education so we could get good jobs so we could become productive members of society. We spent so many years just looking ahead at the next level of school we were expected to complete that we slowly forgot about our dreams of doing exciting things.
We educated ourselves to the best of our abilities. We selected major areas of study based on what we thought was our best chance at getting that much sought after job. Then we went into the world of the working.
We went on to find a spouse, have children, buy cars, then houses, and so on…
For some, this is life. For many, this life is more than enough to feel complete and happy.
For us, it just wasn’t working. We had spent years trying to be happy with this life. We found new jobs and bought new houses and upgraded everything that was even slightly out of date. Still, we didn’t feel complete.
One day, while in the middle of remodeling our kitchen, we asked ourselves to consider those dreams we had forgotten about so long ago. We evaluated our situation and realized we could make one of those dreams come true.
That was the day we started looking for sailboats…

Our Family
Our Family
We are a family. We work. We play. We wash dishes. We homeschool. Sometimes we even argue… There is nothing particularly special about us we just made a choice to see the world and to do it while we are still young and we can experience it together as a family. We realized we don’t want to sit around and watch the world pass us by.
Osiris – He is fun loving and sweet; he loves all things motorized, animals, and cleaning up trash to protect the Earth (especially sea turtles). His favorite thing to do is drive the dinghy and loads more other things. “Silly words are happier than sad words!”
Deirdre – She can usually be found with her nose in a book or making a craft. She loves anchors and most things that remind her of boating life and can play pretend for hours. She enjoys climbing as much as possible and loves going swimming and cats. She also loves playing with her dolls. “ANCHOR!!!”
Carolyn – She is a Ravenclaw who homeschools her two kids… on a boat. She enjoys writing, reading, and making crafts. She wants to see as much of the world as she can while she is still able to enjoy it to its fullest. She likes to explore new ideas and meet new people. She loves to find antique maps of the world and believes the more inaccurate the better. “Sometimes you just have to slow down and enjoy where you are right now!”
Jason – He is an engineer by trade and education but the water is what really calls to him. He loves to design, build, and fix just about anything. He enjoys spending time with his family, music of all kinds, getting things done and sailing. “Sometimes life takes you in a new direction!”
Puppins – She isn’t fond of the water but mostly enjoys living on a boat. She can often be found on the deck enjoying as much sun as she can get. “YARP! YARP! YARP! YARP!”
Ash – She is an easy going cat that has never known living anywhere but a sailboat. She seems to even dislike being on solid ground. “Meow, Meow.”
The Questions
The Questions
We get asked “why” a lot when we talk about our lives to people who have never lived on a boat. Well, the best answer we can come up with is, “why not?”
We have done the normal life thing. We have owned big houses and nice cars (with loans of course…). We followed the rules and got the loans and in the end, all we had to show for it was debt and something shiny to brag about.
That kind of life just didn’t work well for us. We want to explore the world! There is so much of the Earth and so many people that it is hard to image just sitting in one place forever. Life for us is boring when we aren’t trying something. We realized that we had to push ourselves out of our comfort zone to even know what we really wanted.
Of course, we also get a lot of questions about our children. The most often asked is about their safety and swimming abilities. Neither of our kids is what I would call an exceptional swimmer so it’s really good that we live on a boat meant to keep them above the water! Of course, they are now exposed to the water more and becoming much more aware and getting better at swimming all of the time.
The next most asked question about the kids is about their education. This is a question we have been asked for many years since we have homeschooled for their entire lives. Education is fairly easy when children are young but gets more complicated and demanding as they get older. Still, it’s not that difficult to keep up with yet. We have many, many books on board and for now we have regular internet access. We also keep several many educational toys, games, and tools to help keep us learning!

Our Boat
SV Rána – She is our boat and our home. She is a 2001 Hunter 410 with a B&R rigged fractional sloop with in-mast furling and a furling genoa. Almost all of her lines lead back to the cockpit to help us single hand as much as possible. Although we may have 2 adults on board, we also have two small children so having everything available whomever is in the cockpit really helps us out!
We did a lot of research before we found what we thought would work for us. We like her styling both interior and exterior as well as her handling. She does everything we need a boat and home to do for now.
